Discussion and Study (40 minutes):
- Understanding the Importance of the Scriptures:
- Alma 37:7-10, 18-19, 44-45 (The Book of Mormon): Discuss the key points and blessings listed in the
provided notes.
- Supporting Scriptures:
- The Holy Bible:
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may
be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.”
- Psalm 119:105: “Thy word is a lamp unto my
feet, and a light unto my path.”
- The Doctrine and Covenants:
- D&C 1:37-38: “Search these commandments,
for they are true and faithful, and the prophecies and promises which
are in them shall all be fulfilled. What I the Lord have spoken, I have
spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth
pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled,
whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the
same.”
- The Pearl of Great Price:
- Moses 1:39: “For behold, this is my
work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of
man.”
- Latter-day Prophets:
- President Thomas S. Monson: “If you are not reading the
Book of Mormon each day, please do so. If you are, I commend you and
invite you to read more.”
- Blessings from the Scriptures:
- Confounding the Wise (Alma 37:7):
- 1 Corinthians 1:27: “But God hath chosen the
foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen
the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.”
- Enlarging Our Memory (Alma 37:8):
- John 14:26: “But the Comforter, which is
the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you
all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have
said unto you.”
- Correction and Repentance (Alma 37:9):
- Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is
quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even
to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
- Guidance to Eternal Life (Alma 37:45):
- John 17:3: “And this is life eternal,
that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou
hast sent.”
Group Activity (20 minutes):
- Scripture Study and Sharing:

on teachings from across the Standard Works and insights from modern prophets.
My
Notes and Query:
While reading this Come, Follow Me Lesson, https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/come-follow-me-for-home-and-church-book-of-mormon-2024/31?lang=eng, I really like this sections:
The
scriptures have been preserved “for a wise purpose.”
Alma 37
These are the notes I wrote in my own study:
Do you appreciate and understand how important the
scriptures are to you in your life?
Blessings that come from having the scriptures, include:
1. The scriptures can confound the wise and bring to light their pretended sophistry.
2. Since there is more wisdom found in the word of God than by those who think they are wise, many souls are brought to salvation. Truth really can set us free.
3. The scriptures enlarge our memory (bringing to light truths we once knew and now recognize).
4. The scriptures can help us see the mistakes we are making, so that we can change our course.
5. The scriptures can bring us to a knowledge of our God, and to the salvation of our souls through Him.
6. The scriptures are powerful tools for missionary work. The convincing power of the Holy Ghost can be present when we witness of the truths found in the scriptures, and when others receive that in the Spirit of truth.
7. The scriptures can help us overcome generational challenges that have plagued our families because of false misconceptions.
8. The scriptures can bring us to repentance, and to a faith and hope in Jesus Christ, to the remission of our sins; whereby, we can rejoice in our Father’s Plan and in our Redeemer Jesus Christ.
9. The scriptures, through our faith and sharing the gospel, can reclaim many of our faltering brothers and sisters who have forsaken the truth, find their way back to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith and salvation.
10. Jesus preserved the scriptures, so that He could show forth His power to future generations, including ours.
11. We see the purposes of God being fulfilled as Latter-day scriptures are being shared, so that The Holy Bible and The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ are working hand-in-hand in proving to the world that Jesus is the Christ.
12. If we give heed to the words of Christ, found in the scriptures, we will be able to stay on the gospel path and be land to safe ground and eventually to eternal life.
13. Vs 45 “The words of Christ [shall], if we follow their course, carry us beyond this vale of sorrow into a far better land of promise.”
Could you compare these ideas with supporting ideas from The Holy Bible, The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, The Doctrine and Covenants, The Pearl of Great Price, and Latter-day prophets in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and write a lesson plan for me?
